The Houston Methodist Institute for Technology, Innovation & Education (MITIE), located in the Houston Methodist Research Institute building, is an innovative virtual hospital and hands-on clinical training facility for health-care professionals seeking to maintain excellent procedural skills and acquire new proficiencies. The mission of Houston Methodist is to provide high-quality, patient-centered care.
Houston Methodist retained Tripp Umbach for business plan completion and strategic planning insight. Tripp Umbach facilitated conference calls and on-site work sessions with a core project planning team from the Academic Institute and conducted interviews with leadership at Houston Methodist and members of the MITIE Steering Committee. Tripp Umbach completed a detailed economic and return-on-investment analysis.
MITIE at Houston Methodist has multiple economic and societal benefits to the health system, industry partners, and the community at large. The annual economic impact to the community of MITIE operations and visitation in 2026 is estimated at $48 million from operations from research grants, contracts, industry collaborations, workshops, and simulation training. Of this amount, $4.9million is attributed to visitor spending in the greater Houston economy.
Tripp Umbach found that the expansion and integration of MITIE under the umbrella of the Center for Interprofessional & Simulation Education can be a game-changer in health-care education, training, and research. As a catalyst for interprofessional and industry collaboration, MITIE will drive the Houston economy today and in the future.
